Jason Pilling w Silver Reeds
the end of the end of the world

Jason Pilling is a prolific polymath from Toronto who makes fascinating videos demonstrating his ability to build and modify and repair all sorts of instruments, but also churns out an impressive amount of earnest and oddly touching music that should be familiar and deeply satisfying to fans of Paul Westerberg or The Waterboys, among others.

“The End of the End Of The World” is a gentle acoustic number with a minimalist arrangement that’s nonetheless breathtakingly beautiful in its restraint and focus.

Typical of Pilling’s work, the lyrics are just enough of a head-scratcher to keep you listening - and relistening - alternately trying to make sure you understand the point he’s getting at, or just enjoying the regular grins that his unexpected word choices will put on your face.

you’re promising to make their wicked fingers all uncurl by doing the same damn thing… so understand why I still have my doubts you’re the beginning of the end of the end of the world

Call it the anti-"I Need A Hero” perhaps. Whatever you call it, it’s gorgeous and an instant staple on our playlists.

Take Off

Take Off is the latest from Toronto’s Jason Pilling, whose single releases are becoming Must See TV, so to speak.

“I’m gonna push, and I want you to push back” is a stunningly familiar and beautiful thought for many - one would hope most - parents, and it’s right at home inside this equally evocative song from Jason Pilling.

A haunting string arrangement handles most of the lifting on this track, so tightly arranged and written yet so full of spectacular imagery and ideas.

“Maple syrup courses through their veins” made us smile the moment we heard it.

Pilling continues to demonstrate an ability to squeeze every drop of feeling out of an idea without ever over-cooking the arrangement. His work is almost invariably a clinic in using sparse arrangements to achieve rich textures.

There are lessons here for a lot of artists.
